They follow in the list the chilena Isabel Allendethe Argentine Jorge Luis Borgesthe Peruvian Mario Vargas Llosa Nobel Prize 2010 and, in fifth positionand, the canonical father of Spanish literature Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra. This is what emerges from the “World Translation Map” that the Cervantes Institute will present next Wednesday at the XI International Congress of the Spanish Language, which is being held in the Andalusian city of Cadiz.
Behind the five authors cited, the first ten in order are completed by the Spaniards Carlos Ruiz Zafon e Arturo Perez-Reverte, the Chileans Luis Sepulveda and Roberto Bolano and the Spaniard Javier Marias. The ranking was drawn up taking into account translations into ten languages: English, French, German, Arabic, Portuguese, Japanese, Italian, Russian, Swedish and Chinese. Depending on the target language, there are considerable divergences regarding the preferences for authors, some of whom are very popular in certain countries and do not rank among the top ten. This is the case of the Chilean Alejandro Jodorowsky, the most translated into French from the Spanish language, while the list of translations into Japanese puts the Argentine-Cuban at the top Che Guevara (ranked eighth) and sixteenth-century Spanish theologian Luis de Granada (sixth).
