The Criminalistics Cabinet Unit (Gacri), an integral part of the General Subdirectorate of Criminal Investigation (SGIC) of the National Civil Police (PNC) of Guatemala, plays a crucial role in the fight against crime in the country. With a file containing more than 6 million fingerprints, this unit has become a fundamental pillar for the justice system.

From the beginning of this year until July 2023, the Gacri Unit has recorded a staggering total of 14,708 fingerprints, providing valuable support to other investigative units in the identification and capture of suspected criminals.
Gacri agents are highly trained by Guatemalan and foreign investigators to analyze and recognize different types of fingerprints. This specialized knowledge allows them to contribute significantly to the resolution of cases related to crimes such as aggravated robbery, extortion, theft, homicides, violence against women and driver liability.
A History of Service
The Gacri Unit has a rich history dating back to its creation on December 5, 1922. Since then, its main function has been to maintain criminal records, feed the police records system, safeguard vital information such as fingerprints and records, as well as eliminate namesakes and police records for those who have completed their sentences or been acquitted of crimes.
In its early years, the unit used the Vucetich system, but with the increase in criminal activity, they adopted the Henry fingerprint system. In addition, they have implemented a Fingerprint and Palmprint Identification System (AFIS) that facilitates the recognition of fingerprints, tattoos, marks and scars, contributing to the search for people related to the commission of crimes.
Service and Education
It should be noted that the Gacri Unit not only provides identification services, but also plays an active role in education. This year, they began to receive criminology interns from various universities, providing them with knowledge about criminal investigation and the justice system in Guatemala. This contributes to the training of future professionals who will play an important role in the fight against crime in the country.
