For the last 38 years, Gagan Petal has been making the lives of the needy in Odisha easier by providing them basic items like clothes, toys and blankets.
65-year-old Gagan Petal has been working for the last 38 years for thousands of needy people living in the tribal areas of Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Gagan is running a unique campaign to meet the needs of these people for food, clothing and clothing. Through this campaign, he is trying to convert someone’s waste material into a smile on someone else’s face.
His house has become a bank of people’s old things. Where you will find clothes, shoes, blankets, bedsheets, toys and household items.
Gagan and his wife are cleaning these old items, making them brand new and delivering them to the people who are in great need of it.
Actually, Gagan, who worked in the post department, started teaching children in the year 1985 to earn some extra income. During this time he saw that the tribal children living around Bhubaneswar did not even have proper clothes to wear. The mothers of these children always requested Gagan to educate their children for free.
Due to his job, Gagan could not do the work of teaching children for a long time. But then he decided to help these families. After this, Gagan appealed to his friends and acquaintances to donate those clothes and items which they do not use. Then Gagan and his wife themselves washed the clothes received from people, stitched them and made them brand new and started giving them to the needy people.
With time, many people of the city started joining his initiative. People would call and ask for their old belongings to be collected and Gagan would go to people and start collecting children’s toys, old utensils, shoes etc.
When the collection increased, he would set out to distribute all this stuff in a vehicle at his own expense.
Gagan has been doing this work for the last several years, the benefits of which are reaching thousands of needy people. Now Gagan wants to start a collection center for this work so that his work continues years after his death.
