Matteo Salvini has been asked by the Palermo prosecutor’s office to impose a six-year prison sentence on charges of kidnapping and abuse of official power.
Kinga Gál, at the press conference held on the occasion of the plenary session of the European Parliament, said: “what we have experienced today convinces us that the world has turned upside down”.
Those Schengen member states that protect the European order are threatened and sanctioned

“It is unacceptable that those decision-makers who protect their own country and citizens, as well as Europe’s external borders, are threatened with prison sentences,” said Gál Kinga, and then added:
border protection is an obligation, without which the Schengen system cannot be operated.
The politician reminded: Hungary was first punished by imposing an unprecedented fine because it protected its external borders and at the same time the borders of the European Union, as well as because it did not allow illegal migrants into the country. Now – as he pointed out – Matteo Salvini is being threatened with six years in prison because he opposed civil organizations illegally bringing illegal migrants into Italy.
“The borders must be protected, and the operation of the ships of civil organizations must be controlled and limited”
– he said.
Kinga Gál informed that the European Parliament treated the request of the Patriots for Europe faction to put Matteo Salvini’s case on the agenda of the EP plenary session as an “incredible and outrageous issue”. Their request was rejected, he noted.
Instead of sanctioning those countries and those political leaders who are in favor of maintaining order, Brussels and the European Commission should provide all material and principled support for border protection.
It should support all political forces that protect the borders of their countries and European citizens at the same time – he emphasized.
“There is only one way we can return to the politics of common sense, if we reject the flawed migration pact and declare that the protection of the external borders is a priority,” Kinga Gál added.
