The Minister of Education and Science, Prof. Galin Tsokov, together with the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, gave an official start to the first Artificial Intelligence Olympiad in the world. It was created by Bulgarians and is becoming one of the largest newly established Olympiads related to artificial intelligence and STEM sciences, the press center of the Ministry of Education announced.

“After the two olympiads in informatics and the one in linguistics, this is another international olympiad that Bulgaria is creating,” noted Prof. Tsokov. According to him, our country is starting an international competition in a field that will be key in the development of humanity in the coming years He congratulated the organizers and the jury, who are at the base to make this a reality, as well as the hosts from the Municipality of Burgas.

“It is significant that the first Artificial Intelligence Olympiad gathers nearly 200 participants – young people from all over the world who are engaged in this field. Today we are setting the stage for annual meetings of some of the most awake minds in this field in different parts of the world and I hope that this exchange of knowledge will also contribute to the development of the world,” said Prof. Tsokov. He also addressed all the participants, wishing that the competition would bring them medals, but also “a lot of good experiences and new friendships”.

Nearly 200 students from over 40 countries will be in Burgas from August 9 to 15 to demonstrate their knowledge in the field of artificial intelligence. These are 44 teams from different countries, and Bulgaria as the host country will be represented by 2 teams.

International scientists from leading universities are involved in the organization and compilation of the tasks, with a key role played by the Bulgarian Institute for Artificial Intelligence and Information Technologies INSAIT, which is part of Sofia University. IOAI’s partners and sponsors are institutions, non-governmental organizations and companies from all over the world, and the general sponsor is Google.

During a week, students, managers and scientists will measure their knowledge in the competition, which combines scientific and applied tasks. Its purpose is to challenge the participants to think critically, to accumulate theoretical and practical knowledge, to give them a perspective on the vast possibilities in this field and to put before them and society the current issues related to artificial intelligence.

The chairman of the Commission for Education and Science in the National Assembly, Dr. Silvi Kirilov, people’s representatives, the regional governor of Burgas, Prof. Maria Neykova, Maria Ilieva, who is the face of the Olympiad, and others took part in the official opening.
