Game Freak announced Ame no Chi Hare Onna
, a free-to-play mobile game co-developed with CHRONOGATE that integrates real-world weather forecasts into its core gameplay loop. Scheduled to launch in Japan this winter for iOS and Android, the project is directed and produced by Shigeru Ohmori.
The studio renowned for building the global Pokémon franchise is stepping away from pocket monsters to tackle an entirely different genre. Game Freak revealed its secret Tokyo Game Show project, pulling back the curtain on a free-to-play mobile game built around live meteorological data.
What Ame no Chi Hare Onna Involves
The title translates roughly to “Sunny Girl After Rain,” and the mechanics follow that premise directly. Game Freak bills the title as a laundry game
, a deliberate nod to the Japanese daily routine of checking local forecasts before hanging out the wash. The game pulls real-time weather information from a player’s actual location to alter in-game conditions, events, and progression.
Beneath the domestic framing lies a magical-girl action RPG. Set in modern-day Japan, the story revolves around magical girls known as Hare Onna
—or Sunny Girls—who possess the ability to turn weather into power and lift people’s spirits. Their divine messengers and partners are called Kumorin
, or little clouds, who grant them their abilities.
Creative Leadership and Inspiration
The project is spearheaded by Shigeru Ohmori, whose previous directorial credits include mainline entries such as Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, Sun and Moon, and Sword and Shield. Ohmori explained to Japanese outlet Famitsu that the concept grew out of a very mundane household habit.

“If you’re going to check the weather forecast every day to do laundry, why not make a game that uses the weather forecast?”
Shigeru Ohmori, Director and Producer
Ohmori noted that he hopes the application will make everyday life more fun and cheerful
. The teaser trailer also introduces the main protagonist, Harewatari Himawari, voiced by Hiyori Kono and designed by Aki Minamino. Her partner, Arai Pon, is voiced by Yuki Nagano and designed by Kyoko Abe of Game Freak.
Development Partners and Weather Integration
Game Freak developed the title alongside CHRONOGATE as a development partner. Promotional material for the game’s launch also features prominent branding from Weathernews, a Japanese weather information and forecasting company. While the exact scope of Weathernews’s involvement remains undetailed in official statements, the inaugural reveal stream broadcasts directly from a Weathernews studio.
For international fans, regional limitations present an immediate hurdle. Because the weather-integration mechanic syncs directly with live Japanese meteorological data, the core gameplay loop will not function as intended outside of Japan at launch. Players outside the region would need a Japanese App Store or Google Play account to access the free-to-play application with in-app purchases.
Next Steps and Upcoming Broadcasts
Game Freak scheduled the first Hare Onna Club Meeting
live stream for September 14 at 19:00 JST. The broadcast splits into two halves: the first covers the game’s production background and overarching concept, while the second brings in voice actors Hiyori Kono and Yuki Nagano to introduce the characters.

Following the broadcast event, Game Freak will showcase further details for Ame no Chi Hare Onna at Tokyo Game Show 2026, which runs from September 17 to 21 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan, ahead of the game’s winter release window.
