WALKER COUNTY (CBSNewsTexas.com) – Firefighters have been working tirelessly to battle a massive wildfire that has engulfed over 4,000 acres in Huntsville, Walker County. As of 8:00 a.m. Sunday, all evacuation orders and road closures have been lifted, bringing some relief to the affected communities. However, officials are urging residents to remain cautious.

The Texas A&M Forest Service reports that the Game Preserve Fire has burned an estimated 4,428 acres and is currently 60% contained, as of 6:40 p.m. Sunday. This represents a significant achievement in the ongoing firefighting efforts.

“Crews continue to improve containment lines around the fire,” said the TFS in a statement. “Engine crews are patrolling and mopping up across the area to check for any heat near containment lines.” These diligent efforts have contributed to the progress made in containing the fire.

Saturday saw the utilization of aircraft to drop water and assist in firefighting efforts, according to TFS. This aerial support has proved to be instrumental in combating the blaze.

The fire initially started just before 4:30 p.m. on Friday and quickly spread from 100 acres to 1,200 acres by Friday night, highlighting the volatile nature of wildfires.

In response to the escalating situation, Governor Greg Abbott activated the Austin Airtanker Base at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport on Friday. The activation aims to enhance Texas’ wildfire suppression efforts over the Labor Day weekend, ensuring that additional resources are readily available to combat the fire.

While progress has been made in containing the Game Preserve Fire, firefighters will continue to work diligently to build, widen, and improve containment lines. Dozer crews are also constructing contingency lines on the west side of the fire.

Despite the lifting of evacuation orders and road closures, it is vital for residents to exercise caution in the area as emergency personnel and vehicles continue their suppression work.

The Game Preserve Fire serves as a reminder of the ever-present threat of wildfires and the importance of swift and coordinated efforts to combat them. This ongoing wildfire season highlights the need for vigilance and preparedness as communities across the nation face the potential dangers posed by these natural disasters.
