Ganesha Chaturthi; Mumbai Corporation constructs artificial ponds to immerse idols

Mumbai: Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is all set to immerse Ganesha idols in an environmentally friendly manner. The corporation modeled by building artificial ponds with the aim of reducing pollution.

The corporation is constructing the pond following the directive that Ganesha idols made of plaster of Paris should not be immersed in ponds or lakes. There are 162 artificial ponds. Assistant Municipal Commissioner Ramkanth clarified that 73 natural immersion sites are also available. Around 55,000 Ganesha idols were immersed in the city of Mumbai yesterday alone. Out of this, 22,687 idols were immersed in artificial ponds.

Ganesha Chaturthi is a ten-day celebration of Lord Ganesha’s birthday. The celebrations started on August 31 and will conclude on September 9.
