Gangnam-gu is holding Seoul’s first joint event commemorating Mental Health Day and Pregnant Women’s Day. Gangnam-gu (City Mayor Seong-myeong Cho), a city where dreams gather and envision the future, will hold a joint event ‘Healthy Mind Happy Mom’ to commemorate Mental Health Day and Pregnant Women’s Day at the Yeoksam 1-dong Cultural Center on October 10th and 11th.

October 10th is ‘Mental Health Day’, a legal holiday that reminds us of the importance of mental health, and is also ‘Pregnant Women’s Day’, which was established to create a social atmosphere that is considerate of pregnant women. Although many autonomous districts have held each anniversary event separately, Gangnam-gu is the first autonomous district in Seoul to hold an integrated event this year. The larger-scale event had a special meaning of feeling the importance of pregnancy and childbirth through more diverse programs, and further protecting the mental health of the entire family.

As a special lecture with this meaning, ‘Preparing parents’ hearts for a baby – Prevention of media addiction’ will be held at the Gangnam Theater (3rd floor) from 19:00 to 21:00 on the 10th. Professor Jeong Yoo-sook of the Department of Psychiatry at Samsung Seoul Hospital informs pregnant women, their spouses, and their families about smartphone addiction, which has recently become a social problem, and the problems experienced by children exposed to the media environment and ways to prevent it. This course is operated on a prior reservation basis, and those who wish to attend can contact the Maternal and Child Health Team of the Health Management Department at the Gangnam-gu Public Health Center.

On the 10th and 11th, an exhibition of paintings will be held in the exhibition room on the first floor under the theme of ‘Share my story with the world.’ A total of 37 works will be exhibited, including pop art self-portraits drawn by registered members of the Gangnam-gu Mental Health Welfare Center through rehabilitation programs such as gardening and art therapy, gardening works using preserved materials, and works by artists with mental disabilities. An animation video of the work will also be screened.

Gangnam-gu Mayor Cho Seong-myeong said, “Mental health and the health of pregnant women are important factors in protecting the happiness of the entire family,” and added, “I hope that this event will serve as an opportunity to take care of the mental health of the family along with the importance of pregnancy and childbirth.” In addition, he said, “We will continue to operate various health promotion programs to help residents lead healthy lives.”
