Gangnam-gu is opening the first robot-based facility in Seoul, the ‘Gangnam Robot Plus Test Field’. Gangnam-gu (Mayor Seongmyeong Cho), which draws the future and a city where dreams gather, is creating the ‘Gangnam Robot Plus Test Field’ at 730 Suseo-dong and will hold an opening ceremony at 2:00 PM on the 23rd. By establishing the first public robot-based facility in Seoul, the district plans to elevate its status as a center for the robot industry and accelerate the creation of a robot hub district in the Suseo Station area.

The ‘Gangnam Robot Plus Test Field’ is a two-building 5,950㎡ building consisting of ▲ Building 1 Collaborative Intelligence Demonstration Development Support Center (3rd floor above ground) and ▲ Building 2 Meister Robotization Support Center (4th floor above ground). It is equipped with about 80 robots of 30 types and 50 types of equipment, as well as a test bed, research lab, lecture room, server room, etc. The Korea Electronics Technology Institute, Korea Robot Industry Advancement Institute, Korea Robot Industry Association, and Korea Industrial Technology Testing and Research Institute jointly conduct projects here. The business areas are ▲ Collaborative Intelligence-based Robot Plus Competitiveness Support Project ▲ Big Data-based Meister Robotization Infrastructure Construction Project ▲ Collaborative Robot Safety Certification and Risk Infrastructure Construction Project.

The Collaborative Intelligence Demonstration Development Support Center carries out the collaborative intelligence-based robot plus competitiveness support project. While existing industrial robots only performed uniform tasks, collaborative intelligence robots perform tasks by adding (plusing) artificial intelligence (collaborative intelligence) to industrial robots and equipment (machines). It is expected that these collaborative robots will be able to contribute to improving the productivity of small and medium-sized enterprises in the future, and the role is to support companies with customized commercial operation technology through verification research.

The Meister Robotization Support Center is promoting the Meister Robotization Foundation Project. As the name ‘Meister’ suggests, it studies robots that learn the skills of skilled manufacturing workers. The root industries (metal processing, automobile parts, electrical and electronic) that form the basis of the entire manufacturing industry have been highly dependent on skilled workers, which has led to low competitiveness. The goal is to transform the skills of these skilled workers into digital assets and discover representative processes with high usability to rapidly advance the process systems of small and medium-sized enterprises. In addition, it plans to conduct a Meister Robotization expert training course for employees of small and medium-sized enterprises.

The collaborative robot safety certification and risk base establishment project is the first domestic project to establish collaborative robot safety certification standards and establish national standards (KS). Collaborative robots that work with workers are exempt from fence installation, unlike industrial robots, but must receive product safety certification. However, since there is currently no domestic certification agency, a large amount of money must be paid to an overseas certification agency. Accordingly, the plan is to establish a domestic certification system to promote the introduction of collaborative robots to industrial sites.

In addition, the district will utilize idle space in the facility to create its own service robot testbed. The design was completed in June and construction is scheduled to be completed in September. The test field, which replicates Apgujeong Street in an outdoor space of 1,360㎡, will be created with an environment similar to an actual road, including traffic lights, crosswalks, unpaved roads, and lawns, and delivery robots and patrol robots can be freely tested. In addition, the district plans to hold a robot lab tour and observation program for residents in cooperation with the Korea Electronics Technology Institute.

Gangnam-gu Mayor Cho Seong-myeong said, “Starting with the construction of this test field, we will focus on creating a robot hub district in the Suseo Station area, which is the driving force for Gangnam’s innovative growth, and lead the growth of the Korean robot industry,” adding, “We will create a robot-friendly city, Gangnam, where robot technology makes residents’ daily lives more convenient.”
