Gangwon National University’s Global Gangwon Culture School program is gaining popularity among foreign workers in the province. Gangwon National University (President Gwang-Rae Kim) announced that it successfully concluded the “Global Gangwon Culture School Program” held for foreign workers at the Jumunjin Agricultural and Industrial Complex on Sunday, August 25.

This program is the second program designed to increase understanding of the local community and support successful settlement in Gangwon-do, following the program for international students attending universities in the province held in July. Foreign workers working in agricultural and industrial complexes in the province participated.

This program involved 22 foreign workers from Indonesia, the Philippines, and Nepal working at four companies in the Jumunjin Agricultural and Industrial Complex (Shinhan Sung Foods, Kangneung Tofu Co., Ltd., DI Co., Ltd., and Chanho Distribution).

Participants had a meaningful time listening to lectures on Gangwon’s history and culture for settling in the region, visiting the local tourist attraction “Arte Museum” and the unicorn company “Terrarosa,” and experiencing K-beauty programs popular with MZ generation workers.

Oki (Affiliation: Shinhan Foods) from Indonesia, who participated in the program, said it felt like studying abroad at a university, and said, “It was very meaningful to be able to experience Gangneung’s culture and history firsthand. I feel like my understanding of Gangwon-do has deepened and my connection with the local community has strengthened.” Meanwhile, Ali (Affiliation: DI Inc.) from Nepal said, “I worked as an English teacher at a high school before coming to Korea, and I was deeply moved by the role of educators in contributing to the development of Korean industry while seeing the kind teachers and passionate professors.”

Professor Choi Geun-pyo, head of the Global Gangwon Culture School, said, “Our university will continue to actively respond to the issues of regional extinction and the role of foreigners,” and “We will also develop a counseling program that connects experts in the fields of law, labor, administration, and finance at the university’s Foreign Workers Support Center so that foreign workers and students working in the region can settle down and reside in Gangwon-do in the long term.”

Kangwon National University President Kim Gwang-rae said, “I am glad that through this program, we can support foreign workers to understand the history and culture of Gangwon-do and to smoothly adapt to the local community,” and added, “We plan to continue to operate programs for foreigners to settle in the region and contribute to strengthening ties with the local community.”

Meanwhile, companies and local governments wishing to participate in the Global Gangwon Culture School program can contact the Gangwon National University International Exchange Center for more information.
