Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province Governor Kim Jin-tae has gone to Naksan Beach to conduct a safety inspection. This safety inspection was conducted in response to concerns about safety accidents due to sharks as the number of tourists visiting the East Coast increases during the peak summer season.

Currently, a total of 86 beaches are open in six cities and counties on the east coast (Gangneung, Donghae, Sokcho, Samcheok, Goseong, and Yangyang), and the number of visitors as of this weekend is 934,598, a 7.1% increase from the same period last year.

Sharks have been spotted 11 times along the East Coast this year, and they have been appearing consistently every month since March, regardless of the region, except for January and February when the sea temperature is low. Last week, a fishing boat operating in the waters off Oho Port in Gosung County also spotted a shark and reported it.

Governor Kim Jin-tae listened to the comprehensive summer beach safety management plan and the status of shark safety net operation at the site, and also personally inspected the beach information boards containing safety rules.

Shark safety nets have been installed as a pilot project at 15 locations, including Naksan Beach in Yangyang, and at Gyeongpo Beach, shark repellents are attached to water motorcycles and a method is being used to send an electric current when a shark is spotted to scare it away.

In addition, based on expert opinions that sharks approach slowly and most of them show their dorsal fins, so safety accidents can be prevented through surveillance activities, the province has strengthened the surveillance activities of safety management personnel at beaches within the province, and is immediately broadcasting warnings such as sirens when sharks are spotted.

Afterwards, local governments, Sokcho Coast Guard, and safety management personnel participated in shark encounter drills to strengthen response capabilities in case of shark appearances. Governor Kim said, “I am grateful to everyone who is sweating without resting on hot summer days,” and “It is expected that more people will visit the East Coast in the future, so please do your best to monitor the beaches in real time and respond quickly in case of an emergency so that vacationers can enjoy themselves with peace of mind.”

Meanwhile, the city plans to gradually expand the installation of shark nets and shark repellents to create safer beaches.
