Renowned Chinese doctor Gao Yaoji, who was instrumental in exposing the spread of AIDS in Chinese villages, has passed away at the age of 95 in New York. Born in Shandong province in 1927, Gao was a gynecologist who became a strong advocate for AIDS patients in the 1990s.

In 1996, Gao discovered that many people with chronic illnesses who had come to Henan in search of work were testing positive for AIDS. It was then revealed that the spread of the disease was due to the collection of blood, including from AIDS patients, by poor individuals in rural China who were selling it for a living. This led to the spread of AIDS from donors to others who received the contaminated blood.

Despite attempts by the government to cover up the issue, Gao took a stand against it. He visited over 100 villages, providing food and clothing to more than 1,000 families affected by AIDS at his own expense. His efforts drew international attention and eventually prompted the Chinese government to ban the sale of blood.

While the government estimates that 740,000 people are infected with AIDS in China, Gao argued that the actual number of cases is much higher, around one crore. As the government’s threats against him intensified, Gao and his family moved to New York in 2009. Gao’s husband, Guo Mingjiu, had passed away in 2006, and she is survived by her three children.

Gao’s legacy as a dedicated advocate for AIDS patients and her relentless efforts to bring attention to the crisis have left a lasting impact on the fight against AIDS in China. Her brave actions have helped to expose the truth and bring assistance to those affected by this devastating disease.
