A cherry blossom road opens up at the old Central Inland Water Research Institute in Gapyeong-gun. The former Central Inland Water Research Institute of the National Institute of Fisheries Science (hereinafter Cheongpyeong Inland Water Research Institute), famous for its beautiful cherry blossoms and a hidden attraction, will open again this year as it did last year.

Since its opening, the Cheongpyeong Inland Water Research Institute, which relocated to Geumsan-gun, South Chungcheong Province, in 2021, has been called a secret garden as it is a security facility due to the nature of the research facility and public access is still restricted.

According to Gapyeong-gun on the 1st, it was decided to temporarily open the former site of the Cheongpyeong Inland Water Research Institute in time for the cherry blossom season in order to provide local residents and tourists with a beautiful natural environment and 70 years of historical value.

The opening period is for two weeks until the 14th of this month, which is the cherry blossom season. This year, due to high temperatures, it was opened a week earlier than last year, allowing people to enjoy the brightness of the cherry blossom road in the reservoir at the Cheongpyeong Inland Water Research Institute at an early age.

In addition, last year’s continued rain caused many cherry blossoms to fall and the disappointment of not being able to enjoy them properly during the opening period is expected to be completely resolved, so it is expected that many visits from local residents and visitors will continue.

Previously, last year, the county signed the Cheongpyeong Inland Water Research Institute Temporary Opening and Operation Business Agreement Ceremony, which included preparing visitor safety management measures for reservoir facilities within the former site of the research institute.

In particular, the safety of visitors was prioritized by applying strengthened safety management facility standards through applying for a permit to use national property, installing additional safety rope fences around the reservoir, and conducting preliminary safety inspections.

Currently, the county is preparing mid- to long-term response plans, such as presenting new local economic revitalization measures to the central government, including a plan to return the reservoir area around the research institute, which has historical value, to local residents.

The 83,000㎡ Central Inland Water Research Institute, operated by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in the Gangbyeon-ro area of Cheongpyeong-myeon, Gapyeong-gun, opened in 1949 as the Cheongpyeong Fish Farm of the Central Fisheries Experiment Station of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy.

Afterwards, it was established as the Cheongpyeong Fish Farm of the Fisheries Agency in 1974, the Cheongpyeong Inland Water Research Institute of the Fisheries Promotion Agency in 1985, and the Inland Water Ecology (Aquaculture) Research Institute of the National Institute of Fisheries Science in 1996. Afterwards, it was reorganized as the Central Inland Water Research Institute of the National Institute of Fisheries Science of the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries in 2013 and relocated to Geumsan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do in March 2021. With this, the 70-year Gapyeong era came to an end.

A military official said, “It is unfortunate that it is a temporary opening during the cherry blossom season rather than a full opening, but by returning a hidden attraction to the residents, we hope that it will provide some comfort by comforting the loss caused by the relocation of the research institute and sharing the historical value of the research institute.” “Following the spring cherry blossom season, we plan to open the autumn foliage course and walking path at the site reservoir within the Cheongpyeong Inland Water Research Institute during the fall foliage season,” he said.
