Gapyeong-gun, first implementation of free shingles vaccination for seniors

by times news cr

Gapyeong-gun is the first to implement free shingles vaccination for the elderly. Gapyeong-gun (Governor Seo Tae-won) announced on the 25th that it will implement free shingles vaccination for 3,000 seniors aged 65 and older starting October 21st. Starting next year, it will be expanded to all seniors aged 65 and older.

The county enacted the “Gapyeong County Shingles Vaccination Support Ordinance” early this year and secured its own budget. Accordingly, 3,000 seniors over 65 years old will be vaccinated for free in the first round this year, and next year, the free vaccination will be expanded to include 6,700 more people who are about to turn 65 and those who are currently over 65 and have not been vaccinated. Therefore, the target of free shingles vaccination will be expanded to all seniors over 65 years old starting next year.

The vaccination target is seniors aged 65 or older (born before December 31, 1959) who have lived in Gapyeong-gun for more than one year, and the vaccine being supported is the live shingles vaccine. If you have had shingles, you can get vaccinated after recovery (6-12 months), and those who have a history of previous vaccination or are immunocompromised and therefore contraindicated for vaccination are excluded.

When visiting a medical institution, you must bring your ID and supporting documents (resident registration copy or transcript issued within the past 7 days). Information on designated medical institutions and other inquiries can be made on the Gapyeong County Health Center website or at the health center’s vaccination room.

In addition, in order to support those who are contraindicated for the shingles vaccine and provide an opportunity to choose the vaccine, a portion of the cost will be supported for the first dose of the shingles vaccine starting from the vaccination start date (October 21). This is limited to those who received the vaccine at a hospital or clinic regardless of region, and you can apply at a public health center or public health branch with your ID, medical fee receipt, and bankbook copy.

Governor Seo Tae-won said, “We will provide free shingles vaccinations to seniors over 65 years of age with weak immune systems to reduce the risk of developing shingles, and even if they do develop the disease, we will help improve their health and quality of life by relieving pain.” He added, “The county will continue to work hard to support the health and happy retirement of seniors.”
