On Monday morning, firefighters continue to work at the scene – piles of garbage are being reloaded and checked with a thermal camera to determine if there is still burning somewhere inside the pile.
Firefighters also estimated that the waste burned in a total area of 800 square meters.
The rescuers managed to protect the diesel fuel tank seven meters away from the flames.
The State Police informed the LETA agency that a criminal proceeding has been initiated regarding the fire.
Also, the police have started criminal proceedings regarding the fire on Mazajā Street in Tukum on Sunday evening, which broke out under unknown circumstances in an uninhabited room located in the former boiler house building. According to VUGD, trash and tires were burning in an unmanaged two-story building on an area of 16 square meters.
As reported, VUGD received the call to the scene on Sunday around 11 am.
The executive director of Tukuma municipality, Ivars Liepiņš, stated in a Facebook post that the fire broke out in the sorting area of ”Piejuras” in Tukuma.
He also informed that there were no victims of the fire and no other material damage, except for the pile of waste, most of which will no longer be able to be sorted and recycled, but will have to be deposited in a landfill.
Liepiņš states that on Monday the responsible services and companies of the municipality will meet to discuss the situation. Also, the State Environmental Service and the State Police will conduct procedural operations to clarify the circumstances.
SIA “Waste management company “Piijūra”” was registered in 2001, and its share capital is 1,308,354 euros, according to “Firmas.lv” information. “Waste management company “Piejūra”” belongs to the municipalities of Talsu (54.55%) and Tukuma (45.26%) counties, as well as the city of Jūrmala (0.19%).
Last year, the turnover of the company was 6.076 million euros, and the profit was 432,197 euros.
