BGMEA has decided to keep all garment factories open from Thursday (September 5). The agency also said that the law enforcement agencies will assist in keeping the factory open.

BGMEA President Khandaker Rafiqul Islam said these things at a press conference at BGMEA Complex in Uttara of the capital on Wednesday (September 4) afternoon.

Khandaker Rafiqul Islam said, ‘167 garment factories have been closed in the last few days due to the labor movement. Although the workers had no involvement in this movement. Attacks by outsiders caused chaos in the garment factories. Therefore, the owners decided to open the garments as law enforcement forces ensured the safety of the factory.

Khandaker Rafiqul Islam said that outsiders are causing trouble in the garment factory and said, ‘Internal problems are very few. No insiders are involved in this mess. But BGMEA does not know who is attacking outsiders. It is the responsibility of law enforcement to find them.

Khandaker Rafiqul Islam said that there is a rule to pay the salary of the factory workers within 7 working days of the beginning of every month, “All the owners of the garment factories follow it.” In some small factories, the owner may delay payment of wages. But BGMEA is very vigilant about this. As soon as we know, we are solving all those problems quickly. Hopefully, there will be no problem in paying the salary in the future.’

Abdallah Hill Rakib, senior vice president of BGMEA said, “The country is going through a difficult time. Now what do we do? The police itself is in turmoil. If the OC is here today, tomorrow I will transfer to another place. The army is there, but they have no arresting powers. And although the police have the power to arrest, they are currently in a very weak state.’

Earlier, BGMEA held a meeting with senior officials of NSI, Industrial Police, Bangladesh Army seeking help in the labor situation in the garment sector. He assured that the law and order forces would provide security assistance to the garment factory.
