Ecopetrol has confirmed the existence of natural gas in the Uchuva-2 well, located in the Tayrona Block in the Colombian Caribbean. This discovery follows the discovery made in 2022 with the Uchuva-1 well.
Drilling of the Uchuva-2 well began on June 19 and is located 32 kilometers from the coast, with a depth of 804 meters from the water level. This well is crucial for evaluating the gas potential of the region and for the development of a new production frontier in the Colombian Caribbean.
The consortium responsible for this project is made up of Petrobras, which operates the well with a 44.4% stake, and Ecopetrol, which owns 55.6% remaining. Both partners will continue drilling to determine the precise characteristics of the deposit.

Ricardo Roa Barragán, president of Ecopetrol, highlighted that the results of the Uchuva-2 well will offer key information about the main reservoirand a significant natural gas reserve is expected to be announced by the end of October or beginning of November.
Roa Barragán stressed that this progress is the result of a collaborative effort with national and regional authorities, as well as with the consortium partners.
Elsa Jeanneth Jaimes, Vice President of Offshore at Ecopetrol, said the discovery reaffirms the gas potential of the Colombian Caribbean and promises new sources of natural gas for the country before the end of the decade.
The company considered that “this successful result will provide significant information for the development of the new production frontier in the Colombian Caribbean, in addition to reinforcing the gas potential that has been predicted in the region.”
