Gas leak at ice plant in Mazatlán leaves 18 intoxicated

On the afternoon of this Friday, January 3, 2025, it was recorded a gas leak inside an ice plant located in Mazatlan, Sinaloawhich left 18 people intoxicated.

Due to the gas leak, a mobilization of emergency services was generated, so paramedics from the Sinaloa Red Cross, as well as the Mazatlán Civil Protection, arrived to to meet this situation.

Reports indicated that of the 18 intoxicated people, 10 of them required to be transferred to a hospital to receive medical attention.

18 people were poisoned after a gas leak at an ice plant in Mazatlán

This Monday it was reported a gas leak which mobilized the emergency forces of the city of Mazatlán, Sinaloa.

This took place within a ice plantlocated between the streets Justo Sierra, Ángel Flores and Francisco Serrano.

According to Mazatlán Civil Protection, the emergency was derived from an ammonia leakwhich caused 18 workers to be poisoned.

Among the symptoms they presented were burning in the eyes, burning in the facein addition to itching in the area of ​​the hands and arms.

For this reason, paramedics from the Sinaloa Red Cross and Civil Protection provided medical care, managing to stabilize 8 of the intoxicated people.

While the rest of the affected people were transferred as follows:

  • four to the clinic of the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS)
  • five to the Red Cross hospital in Mazatlán
  • one to the General Hospital of Mazatlán

Mazatlán firefighters neutralized a gas leak in the environment

Oscar Roberto Osunacoordinator of Civil Protection of Mazatlán, stated that after the gas leak, specifically ammonia, the emergency services were forced to neutralized toxicity in the environment.

This is because the aroma of ammonia spread through several streets, which generated alert among the neighbors near the ice plant.

In addition, he pointed out that the gas leak was probably due to negligence among workersso the causes will be investigated to avoid greater risks for the population surrounding the ice plant.
