Fuels add five weeks to the rise with annual maximums in gasoline in the middle of the August bank holiday, thus touching the maximum price so far in 2023. The cost for drivers who go to gas stations to fill up the tanks of their vehicles has risen skyrocketed, and if you refuel 55 liters of diesel – which occupies an average tank – you will already have to face a bill of 85.36 euros, that is, 6.88 euros more than at the beginning of the summer.

Diesel has become more expensive by 8.8% since June 19, the official date of the start of the summer solstice, going from 1,427 euros per liter refueled to 1,552 euros. In the case of gasoline, the increase is 5.3%, since in a month and a half it has risen from 1.596 euros per liter refueled to 1.68 euros. So, filling an average tank with 55 liters of gasoline means paying 92.4 euros, which is equivalent to an increase of 4.54 euros, it comes out to 92.4 euros, while doing it with a diesel would cost 85.36 euros , 2.75 euros more than in the last reference. according to data from the EU Oil Bulletin collected by Servimedia, which collects data from more than 11,400 service stations in Spain.

The price of diesel and gasoline starred in a significant escalation in the first half of the summer. After experiencing a slight setback in the first days of July, both fuels have chained 35 days to the rise. The direct consequence of this is that gasoline is more expensive for the consumer than it was a year ago. At that time, the price of this fuel was 1.86 euros per liter refueled but, with the bonus of 20 cents per liter, the cost for the consumer was 1.66 euros. That is, now it costs a little more than a cent compared to the same period last year. In the case of diesel, the gap has been reduced in recent weeks, but the difference for the pocket of citizens is still 10 cents, since a year ago a liter cost 1,654 euros with the bonus approved by the Government (1,864 euros per liter without it).

In relation to the first week of this 2023, in which the effects of the discount were still being felt in the last days of December, gasoline has become more expensive by almost 21.5% and diesel by 6.37%. If we look at the data from a month ago, the first fuel is now 5.4% more expensive, and the second, 8.8%.

The prices of both fuels, yes, are far from the historical highs that they reached in June 2022, since gasoline costs 13.4% less and diesel, 18.3% less. Despite this, both fuels are still far from the all-time highs that were recorded in the week of June 26, 2022, when gasoline stood at 2,128 euros per liter refueled (1,928 with the 20-cent bonus that was then in force). and diesel at 2.1 euros (1.9 euros with the reduction approved by the Government).

Despite this increase, the price of 95 unleaded gasoline in Spain remains below the average for the European Union, located at 1.801 euros per liter, and for the euro area, with an average price of 1.861 euros. In the case of diesel, the price in Spain is also lower than the EU average, which is 1,689 euros, and the euro zone, where it marks a price of 1,725 euros.
