The price of fuel has always been higher on the other side of the fence

The image is repeated every year. Hundreds of French people cross this side of the road to refuel their vehicle and buy alcohol and tobacco, because it is more profitable for them. Thus, Behobia stores and service stations near the border crossing receive many French customers and continue to do so, sources in the sector confess to DV.

But how is the price differential currently? Is it still cheaper to fill gasoline and diesel in the Bidasoa region than to do it in Biarritz and Baiona? How does the discount work in the neighboring country? Is the grant the same amount? How is a price panel interpreted in Iparralde? Have you already collected the discount?

There is one aspect that should be clarified for Gipuzkoans, which may be misleading. The price panel of Gipuzkoa gas stations does not include the discount of 20 cents promoted by the central government, which is applied when paying for refuelling. In addition, from the Gipuzkoa automotive business association (AEGA), which represents 75% of the gas stations in the territory, they stress that Repsol, Cepsa and BP apply discounts “of 25 cents and 30 if you have a loyalty card”, thus saving increases.

Difference

The price panel of Gipuzkoan gas stations does not include the discount, while the French ones do

In France, on the other hand (and here may come the first confusion), the discount is 15 cents and, this is also important to highlight, the price supplier already has the discount collected. Hence, more than one Gipuzkoan has been able to think that fuel is cheaper at some Iparralde gas stations. For example, in the Leclerc de Anglet, a liter of gasoline 95 is 2.075 euros (with the discount already applied), so 50 liters cost 103.75 euros. This is the gas station with the most competitive prices in Iparralde.

Those 2,075 euros are, at first glance, cheaper than the 2,199 euros that Repsol offers in Irun. But with the discount of 20 cents applied, filling the deposit costs 99.95 euros at the border crossing. With which, extra discounts aside, there is already at least a gap of almost 4 euros.

In the case of diesel, the minimum price is again located in Anglet, with a liter at 2,078 euros, so that 50 liters are worth 103.9 euros. At the Behobia border gas station, at 2,159 euros and 20 cents less, the bill remains at 97.95 euros. The gap in this case would be 5.95 euros. Next, we leave you two tables with the minimum and maximum price of the two most used fuels both in Gipuzkoa and Iparralde.

Usual diesel price

  • Gipuzkoa:
Minimum price for 2,009 euros (Merkaoil, Lezo). Maximum price for 2.19 euros (Fuel Truck, Oiartzun).

  • Lapurdi:
Minimum price for 2,078 euros (Leclerc, Anglet). Maximum price for 2,349 euros (Agip, Aire de Laq).

Gasoline price 95

  • Gipuzkoa:
Minimum price for 2,099 euros (Merkaoil, Lezo). Maximum price for 2,267 euros (Cepsa, Oiartzun).

  • Lapurdi:
Minimum price for 2,075 euros (Leclerc, Anglet). Maximum price for 2,215 euros (Total, Baiona).

From AEGA they assure that despite what is falling, Gipuzkoan service stations, made up mostly of small businessmen, “are preserving employment against all odds”, and blame the Government of Pedro Sánchez for its erratic mobility policy to explain the incessant increase in fuel prices.
