The recent premiere of the third season of “He who is in charge” it serves as a valid excuse to dialogue with Gaston Cocchiarale, one of the best actors of his generation. With a business and entrepreneurial spirit, he is still remembered for his participation in “El Clan” with Pablo Trapero, where he crossed paths with Guillermo Francella in a story of crime, madness, death and family tragedy.
This season he showed a strong theatrical presence by starring in “The Great Renunciation” and “Comienzo”, the latter a witty tribute to the first night in a couple’s life. A cruel and charming story centered on the ordinary solvency of Daniel Veronese.
A sunny afternoon that allows you to take off your coats and enjoy the Palermo Cafeteria serves as a favorable location to listen to an actor in constant evolution.
News: What is the best thing about being an actor?
Gastón Cocchiarale: That allows you to live many lives, many jobs, some situations and feelings that you may not have the opportunity to experience in your everyday life and suddenly being an actor gives you the opportunity to discover things about yourself that you weren’t even knowing what you had inside, certain sides that you don’t dare to reveal or show at all. Theater invites you to play with situations and emotions that you don’t have on a day-to-day basis. This is a post that deals with a very powerful thing that is self-knowledge, in that sense for me it is very beautiful to act.
News: Do you remember anything special you had to learn to create a character?
They are glass: Yes of all! To get an idea of how to play rugby for “The Clan”, I had to go to a gym and achieve a body as close as possible to that of a rugby player. Music is not my thing and nevertheless I learned to play the guitar for “Neither hero or traitor” and the Sandro series. So many things that are good because they allow you to research skills that you wouldn’t have done otherwise. In addition, you get to know other worlds that you have no idea about. For example, in “Nach Laoch na Traitor” there is a movement of people who flagged themselves so that they would not have to go to the Malvinas, a story that I did not know and that was interesting to me. When I did the work “Jauría” it was also important to know the history of “La Manada”, to understand the judicial case, to see how sexuality and the issue of abuse are put to the test. These are all issues that bring you deeper into the profession and ultimately help you become a better person.
News: With Vanesa González, his partner in “Comienzo”, they were already sharing “Jauría”. Is this your first time with Daniel Veronese directing?
They are glass: Yes, this is the first time I have worked with Veronese, that was one of the reasons I was most motivated about the project, to be able to work with a director like him whom I respect and admire a lot because He has an amazing journey and career.
News: His character in “Comienzo” is almost a symbol of the new masculinity, he is the woman who advances and has his problems. How did you face it?
They are glass: The idea was precisely to build a different story about masculinity. Talking about someone who maybe just wants to have sex, needs some kind of connection to get there. A man who shows his vulnerable side, which we almost never allow ourselves because of this great mandate, this social construction that a man can do everything, the story of the alpha male. It seemed to me that the subject allowed me as an actor to connect with another masculinity, more emotional, less animal, more reflective, more tender and more human. It’s interesting because Vane’s character goes for everything, she’s self-sufficient, independent, developed, she runs all over the place to have sex (laughs). This counterpoint works very well to break with pre-established cultural roles and think about another kind of bond, a sexual-effective encounter from the other side.
News: Do you act the same way if there is a large or small audience in the room?
They are glass: Yes, although of course one prefers the room to be full or to have more people, not only for an economic reason, especially for the theatrical ritual which is more powerful when the audience is larger because there is another energy , laughter is contagious. But when there is less audience there is also a nice side, that is the more personal thing. I try to give everything, whether it’s one, a hundred or a thousand.
News: Your father recently had a birthday and he dedicated a very nice post to him in which he remembered that he was with him to see the works of Guillermo Francella or everything that happened when you were in your first film. Was your father very important in your career?
Cocchiarale: Yes, of course! And at first he told me not to be an actor, but that limit encouraged me, made me want to cross it. I thought: “I’m going to be an actor not only because I want to but to show my old man that I can.” It was always a “no” but something to do with telling me that this is a difficult job, an unstable career and suggesting something to do at the same time. The truth is that I never thought of dedicating myself to another field to enhance acting. Now I act, produce and teach, but I always move within the profession. Life gave me the opportunity to develop, do well and live from this. When my ex started to reassure himself that his son could morph thanks to acting, he started to accompany me in a wonderful way.
News: When did your dad click?
They are glass: The first time I was in a movie was “El clan”, I dreamed of working with Guillermo Francella, my father knew how important it was to me and when I told him at lunch he was excited . He told me he was going to Luján because he promised he would walk there if he stayed. It was very beautiful, it’s always there, “The Great Abandonment” you’ve seen it 44 times and it brings 15 friends with me every time it comes. He is a very tough guy, he owns restaurants and I inherited a lot of his work example and his heart was broken for what he loves. I am half a workaholic thanks to him too, let’s say all, but I thank him for it.
News: Meanwhile, he made headlines for the short films he made with them Bizarrap. How was that created?
They are glass: Out of nowhere he wrote to me one day on my Instagram. I was taking a nap, I woke up and I had some audio recordings of it. He told me that he liked my job, that he had seen me in several films and in “The Manager”, he told me that he had an idea and that he would like me to act in it. I replied: “Call me, tell me and we’ll do it.” We were chatting for a while, absolutely divine, a very bright child, and at just 25 years old he has incredible creative possibilities. We talk about life, music, theatre. He is from Haedo and I am from Ramos Mejía, we are both from the West Zone. Later I found out that Guillermo Francella was going to be in the first short, the idea was to make a performance like “The Wolf of Wall Street” and it turned out great, it had a great impact! Six months later he wrote to me again to make another one. The first was directed by Louta and the second by Armando Bó.
News: Do you recognize him enough on the street from his character in “The Manager”?
They are glass: Yes, “The Manager” has a very powerful appeal with the public. We talked a lot with Guillermo, who I consider a bit of my dad because I started with him in “El clan” and he is a very generous person who guides you and gives you advice on how to handle yourself in the profession, about how great it is. to see how a series on a platform was able to achieve such an impact on the street. FHow to make daily success on open TV. Each season surpasses the previous one in views, the fourth has just been confirmed for next year and I’ll be there too. There is nothing more beautiful for an actor than to do things that people celebrate and appreciate. I think the most important thing is to tell a story related to our cultural identity, it is a fiction that gives the audience something of Argentinian uniqueness among so many products of globalization. The figure of the manager, that building with the union member, the politician, the administration, are very much ours and are met in a different way.
News: In some interview I read that you want to work with Natalia Oreiro, Leo Sbaraglia, Ricardo Darín and Damián Szifron. Let’s take advantage of the fact that the movie “The Simulators” is coming Will Szifron throw something at him?
Cocchiarale: Oh, I would. Let the title be: “I want to work with Damián Szifron”Let’s see if we can nail it with that (laughs). I would love to do something with him, he is a director who elevates our cinema, an excellent man. If I get to work on the movie “The Simulators” I will go crazy!
