Kannur: A study by the Malabar Cancer Center shows that the incidence of gastrointestinal cancer is increasing in North Kerala. Of the 8435 patients, 69% were diagnosed with lifestyle-related cancer. Two-fifths of all cases are in the esophagus and large intestine. Experts say a detailed study is needed. The increase in lifestyle diseases, including fatty liver, also points to dietary patterns.

There is a worrying information in the number of patients who have come to the Malabar Cancer Center. Looking at the ten-year figures, the first eight-year views are not from 2018-19. The head cancer was more prevalent in the first eight years, said the head of the cancer registry & epidemiology department, Dr. Saina Sunilkumar told Asianet News.

However, among those seeking treatment at the Thiruvananthapuram RCC during the same period, oral cancer and lung cancer were the first. After this, the location of the stomach and gastrointestinal cancer changes with that of North Kerala. Research is needed to confirm whether this is a change in diet.

Fatty diseases are becoming more common in young people and children. Experts point to the habits and dangers that lead to this. Hepatologist & Liver Transplant Physician Dr Harikumar and Internal Medicine Consultant Dr Arun NM told Asianet News that detailed studies were needed. The statistics remind us that it is time for the state, which was first named the state of lifestyle diseases, to embark on serious research.
