The autonomous fleet of Gatik, consisting of class 3 to 7 vans and utility vehicles, will be equipped with so-called smart Goodyear tires. Gatik’s vehicles, specialized in medium-distance autonomous B2B logistics, will thus benefit from Goodyear SightLine technology, a smart tire solution, primarily in the United States and Canada.

“As the only point of contact between the vehicle and the road, the tire can play a crucial role in enabling the vehicle to react as a driver would,” explained Chris Helsel, senior vice president of global operations and chief technology officer at Goodyear. “Gatik is revolutionizing the autonomous technology space. By communicating real-time information through smart tire data, we can help Gatik’s autonomous driving system become even safer, more reliable, and efficient.”

Through comprehensive real-world testing in numerous challenging driving configurations, smart tire data on road conditions and tire status have helped Gatik advance its autonomous vehicle (AV) systems with precise information on turn severity and braking, rolling resistance, and axle and tire load.

This data, communicated between Goodyear SightLine technology and Gatik’s autonomous driving system via a real-time feedback loop, has allowed Gatik to enhance numerous performance metrics, including the ability to quickly and safely adapt to various road conditions, even when the truck’s weight or payload varies with each delivery.

The two companies have collaborated to conduct rigorous testing at Goodyear’s test tracks in San Angelo, Texas. Through this collaboration, Gatik can demonstrate that its autonomous vehicles are tested in a safe, closed environment under normal and unusual driving scenarios, such as traffic lights, road signs, evasive maneuvers, sharp turns, collision avoidance, precise lane tracking, and minimum-risk braking and stopping distances.

Goodyear and Gatik plan to integrate Goodyear’s predictive road condition monitoring solution into Gatik’s autonomous driving system. This integration will allow Gatik to strategically plan its operations, ensuring consistent and reliable freight transportation for its broad customer base, including the largest supermarkets, retailers, distributors, e-commerce platforms, and consumer goods companies in the country.
