World number 4 Coco Gauff reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open for the first time by leaving only three games to Poland’s Magdalena Frech, outclassed 6-1, 6-2 in 63 minutes on Sunday.
For a place in the last four, Gauff, who will celebrate her twentieth birthday in March, will face the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk (35th) or the Russian qualifier Maria Timofeeva, 20 years old and 170th in the world.
The young American has not missed a single set since the start of the Australian fortnight. The winner of the 2023 US Open is one of the last two players in the top 10 still competing in Melbourne, with Aryna Sabalenka, world No.2 and holder of the trophy.
Until then, she had not yet made it past the round of 16 in Melbourne (2020 and 2023). Gauff ideally kicked off his 2024 season by retaining his title in Auckland, New Zealand, in early January.
