India will become a chipset hub
PM Modi had set the target of making India a mobile hub as well as a chipset hub. For this, the Semiconductor PLI (Production Linked Incentive) scheme has been started by the Modi government. This is an incentive scheme of the Government of India for making semiconductors. Under this scheme, Rs 76,000 crore will be spent in 6 years to make semiconductors. Also, an incentive amount of Rs 2.3 lakh crore will be given.

what is a semiconductor

A semiconductor chip is a small electronic device made of silicon or germanium. Semiconductors can be called the brain of electronic devices. This chip follows automatic commands in electronic devices. Suppose, you give a voice command to lower the audio of the TV, then the volume of your TV decreases. Semiconductors play a role in its functioning. Semiconductors are used in electronic devices like computers, smartphones, and televisions. Semiconductors are used today in communication devices, treatment of diseases, and scientific research.

China will get a tough competition
Actually, China is the world’s largest semiconductor manufacturing country, which is used in every electronic item including cars and mobiles. To compete with China, Tata Group will set up a chipset plant in Morigaon district of Assam at a cost of Rs 27,000 crore. The first phase of this plant will start by mid-2025. About 30 thousand people are expected to get employment from this unit. Tata believes that this plant will meet the Artificial Intelligence (AI) semiconductor demand of the entire world.
