Gayle Benson Demands Accountability Following Saints 1-4 Start

New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson issued a stern warning following a 23-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, declaring the team’s 1-4 start unacceptable. Speaking at the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club, Benson placed accountability across leadership, coaching, and the roster as the franchise struggles at Caesars Superdome.

Gayle Benson Demands Accountability After Three Straight Home Losses

The New Orleans Saints find themselves mired in a familiar and unwelcome position. Three consecutive defeats inside Caesars Superdome have dropped the team to 1-4 on the season, matching their poor start from a year ago. Following Sunday’s 23-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, team owner Gayle Benson stepped forward to address the growing unrest across the franchise and its fan base.

Speaking at the Greater New Orleans Quarterback Club, Benson made it clear that the current level of play falls well short of expectations. Her remarks arrived on the heels of a difficult three-game homestand that included a lopsided 45-24 defeat to the archrival Atlanta Falcons during the franchise’s 60th anniversary celebrations.

“I will not make excuses, and I will not accept this level of performance as our standard. I am committed to making the decisions necessary to improve this team. Everyone in this organization understands the urgency. We must prepare better, execute consistently and correct the mistakes that are costing us the games.”

Kellen Moore and Mickey Loomis Face Mounting Pressure

Benson deliberately outlined the specific areas of responsibility across the organization, naming second-year head coach Kellen Moore and general manager Mickey Loomis while emphasizing that no one is exempt from scrutiny.

The Saints are 7-15 since Moore took over as head coach in 2025. After entering the year with hopes of contending in a wide-open NFC South, the offense has sputtered. Against Minnesota, quarterback Tyler Shough managed just 96 passing yards against a stout visiting defense, failing to build on a promising two-game start to the campaign that featured an overtime thriller against the Detroit Lions and a road victory against the Baltimore Ravens.

Loomis, who has served as general manager since May 2002, built the roster that secured Super Bowl XLIV under Sean Payton and Drew Brees. Yet, the franchise has not reached the playoffs since Brees retired in 2021, finishing above .500 only once since Payton’s departure in 2022.

“Kellen Moore and his coaches are responsible for preparing our players to perform. Mickey Loomis and our football staff are responsible for building a roster capable of sustained success. Our players are responsible for their preparation and execution. I am responsible for holding this organization accountable.”

Losing Home Field Advantage at Caesars Superdome

The frustration extends beyond the scoreboard to the stands. During both the Atlanta and Minnesota matchups, opposing fans from visiting delegations overtook the lower bowl of Caesars Superdome, echoing loud chants as the home team faltered. The Saints have now lost 14 of their last 19 games played in New Orleans dating back to Week 3 of the 2024 season.

Players voiced similar despair over the recent stretch of games. First-year guard David Edwards, signed in free agency to bring a winning mentality from Buffalo, called the three straight home defeats gut-wrenching, noting that the team must discover constructive ways to move forward together.

Edge rusher Cameron Jordan emphasized the need for internal discipline as the locker room faces its latest test of adversity. With 12 games remaining on the schedule, the team insists the necessary components are present, but execution remains elusive.

“Dudes got to show exactly who they are in times of adversity. Last week we got punched in the mouth? Cool, how do you respond? There’s guys that have made business decisions, there’s guys that fought through. As a team, we’re not disciplined enough at the end of the day.”

Upcoming Matchups Against Giants and Steelers in Paris

The Saints will attempt to arrest their skid on the road against the New York Giants before traveling directly to France, where they will serve as the home team against Pittsburgh.

Whether upcoming personnel decisions or on-field adjustments follow remains unstated by ownership, but Benson made it clear that her patience is finite.

“We cannot change the results of our first five games. We are responsible for what we do next. I expect better. Our fans deserve better. And I am determined to see that we deliver it.”
