The train drivers’ union GDL drew a positive conclusion after the end of its three-day rail strike and at the same time threatened further industrial action. “It is time for Deutsche Bahn to move, otherwise it will lose touch here too,” explained GDL chairman Claus Weselsky on Friday evening, with a view to concessions from other railway companies. The union called on Deutsche Bahn to return to the negotiating table “with substantial offers”.

The rail strike ended as scheduled on Friday evening at 6 p.m. The GDL spoke of an “overwhelming strike participation” by its members. “If there is no apparent willingness to engage in substantial negotiations, then further strikes can be expected, which could go beyond the strike that ends today,” the union further announced. It explained even their willingness to negotiate.

Deutsche Bahn pointed out that an emergency timetable would still apply after the strike ended on Friday evening. In individual regions, however, more trains would run again from 6 p.m., especially on local and S-Bahn services. Nevertheless, the company asked all travelers to check their connections online before starting their journey. From Saturday, the trains should then run “almost completely” again, according to the Internet service X (formerly Twitter).

The train drivers’ strike began at 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning. In addition to DB, other companies were also affected. At the railway company Transdev, the strike was ended early on Friday afternoon after Transdev had shown itself ready to reach an agreement regarding the GDL’s core demands, according to the union. In addition to higher wages, the GDL is demanding a reduction in working hours to 35 hours with full wage compensation for employees in shift work.
