During the semi-finals, MTK reached the finals against Gellért SE and Kiskút against Sportmánia, which ended with Székesfehérvár defending their title. Geller won the bronze medal for the second time in a row against Sportmánia.
– We can be very optimistic about the future, as we have a talented, young, strong and cohesive team in the field – György Kiss, coach of Gellért SE, began his assessment. – We won against Honvéd by a convincing margin, while we played a close match against Kiskút, nuanced things decided in favor of the eventual winner. As for the semi-finals, MTK came up with a powerful squad, they were strengthened by Dalma Gálfi, who excelled at Wimbledon, Réka Jani, who performed well at the WTA tournaments, or the routine Ágnes Bukta. Meli Bíró and Gréti Nemcsek routinely won their individual matches, while Zsófi Susányi lost in a long match. It’s a huge thing that he took up the game at all, since his child was born four months ago. We didn’t show any shame in doubles either, but we had no chance against the strong MTK – evaluated.
As for the bronze medal match, Geller led 4–1 after the singles matches, so the doubles was no longer played. Melinda Bíró, the player from Gellért, received a free card for the qualifiers at the $250,000 WTA tournament to be held in Budapest, in which she will start playing on Friday.
– It is also a huge thing that Meli’s name was mentioned at all, to start in such a big tournament. We would like him to play as good a match as possible, since this adult level is a completely different coffee house, the main table features top 100 WTA players – added Kiss proudly.
István Hajnal, the coach of Sportmánia in Szeged, believed that his team gave their best, and Gellert achieved a well-deserved success.
– I rather tried to have the university students who study in Szeged play. Our goal was to give everyone a chance and to keep our membership, so we were successful. MTK and Kiskú feature the best of Hungarian women’s tennis, while Gellért was made up of junior national team players. We constantly have smaller competitions, but we put the emphasis on training, we are preparing for the August age group national championships – István Hajnal, coach of Sportmánia, told our newspaper.
