The series of disasters experienced by Russia in the war against Ukraine, culminating in the blowing up of the Crimean bridge, brought with them a new appointment to the commander of the Russian forces in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed General Sergei Sorobikin to the position and he carries with him a very frightening reputation. “General Armageddon” and “The Butcher from Syria” are among his nicknames that testify to his cruelty.

The purpose of his entry into office is to bring order to the Russian army, which suffers from many abuses. Russia was sure that with its invasion of Ukraine at the end of February it would be able to finish the operation quickly, but it is unable to deal with the strong resistance from the determined Ukrainians.

Surobikin’s reputation comes in no small part from leading the Russian forces in the fighting in Syria where he led the heavy bombing of the city of Aleppo. “Knowing or should have known about the abuses (in Syria) and did not take an active step to arrest or punish the perpetrators” – this is how human rights organizations accused Sorovkin. “Sorovkin’s command was clinical, brutal, and often calculated” said Charles Lister of the US Army.

Sorobikin just took office and has already started working. Last Monday he ordered, according to Putin’s insinuation, to bomb the cities of Ukraine, including the capital city of Kyiv. These bombs were intended to hit civilian targets and show that the Russian attack is escalating. The appointment seems to show that Putin does not intend to give up or reach a compromise.
