General Motors Announces Layoffs at Michigan Plants
General Motors, the largest employer among car manufacturers in the USA, has announced that it will lay off 1,300 workers at two different plants in Michigan at the beginning of January. The layoffs will affect 945 workers at the Orion assembly plant and an additional 350 workers at the Lansing plant.
The Orion assembly plant, which is currently finishing production of the Chevrolet Bolt electric model, is converting to the production of an electric truck, leading to the layoffs. The Lansing plant, which includes 1,400 workers, is ending work on the Chevy Camaro model line but will continue production of the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 models.
General Motors had previously announced the postponement of the start of production of the electric truck at the Orion plant in order to make engineering changes. The company also recently abandoned its goal of building 400,000 electric vehicles between 2022 and mid-2024, reflecting a slower adoption of electric vehicles in the market.
