Much has been said about Generation Z‘s relationship with work. Importance of telecommuting and personal life, lack of loyalty to employers, desire to work less… Enough to sometimes make Zoomers, as they are also called, seem like lazy ungrates. However, this population born between the late 1990s and 2010s may turn out to be more complex and happier at work than we believe, according to the Ifop 2024 barometer created for the National Confederation Junior-businesses made public this Thursday.

First lesson of this study conducted on 1002 young people between 18 and 28 years old, 83% of them believe that their current position corresponds to their expectations and the promises of recruiters. A happy generation at work, the Zoomers? If 48% of the young people interviewed believe that their job can represent routine and 47% security, 43% still describe it as “pleasure” and 38% as “pride”.

Another element that unites the idea that one’s job can be synonymous with pleasure and pride, the study reveals that 52% of them would be ready to change jobs “for a more attractive job despite being less paid than 34% of all” . heritage (according to a 2023 Ifop study). An idea that appears to be less widespread among the young women interviewed (46%, compared to 59% of men in the 2024 barometer).

A very strong desire to undertake

If salary remains a decisive criterion in choosing a job for Generation Z (43%), almost as many (42% of young people interviewed) believe that the internal climate is also essential (42%). This is followed by the possibility of evolving within the company and planning in the long term (33%) and its geographical location (32%). The possibility of teleworking appears only in 7th place among the criteria indicated.

However, in this generation the desire to undertake and create one’s own business is confirmed. 71% of Zoomers surveyed say they are interested or have already thought about it (compared to only 34% of the overall active population). 67% of them also declare themselves interested in becoming self-employed (compared to 37% of workers) and 65% in combining the status of employee and self-employed (compared to 34% overall).

So while many seem to aspire to business creation and independence, it should be noted that few of them become active in this age group. The fear of failure for 52% of them (60% among young women compared to 43% of young men) and the feeling of not being able to access financing (51%) are at the top of the list of reasons that prevent them from doing so .
