On the occasion of a panel on ”the fight against religious hatred, as incitement to discrimination, hostility or violence”, organized as part of the 55th session of the Human Rights Council of Man (CDH), chaired by Morocco, the mission indicated that the visit of Pope Francis to Morocco in 2019 intimately embodies Morocco’s approach to interreligious dialogue, recalling the launch of the “Call for Al Quds” by HM King Mohammed VI and Pope Francis, which aims to preserve and promote the multi-religious character, the spiritual dimension and the particular identity of the holy city, as a symbol of coexistence and common civilizational heritage.
And added that ”Islam, in its true acceptance, is a religion of openness, moderation, tolerance and dialogue between cultures and civilizations and cannot be the receptacle of an outpouring of hatred which does not say no longer his name.
Morocco, to this end, welcomed the holding of this debate on the fight against religious hatred, insofar as it makes it possible to “measure the pulse of a context marked by the multiplication of hate speech and acts of violence on religious grounds.
The Moroccan mission highlighted the resolution on “the elimination of all forms of intolerance and discrimination based on religion or belief”, proposed by Morocco and adopted unanimously in July 2023, adding that this text provides for respect for religions and beliefs as an inalienable international right.
In this context, the kingdom reiterated its “deep conviction that freedom of religion and freedom of expression are inseparable, even consubstantial”, noting that the Rabat Plan constitutes an “important tool” to fight against hate speech.
