Genius or excessive? The first school in the world to ban the use of smartphones

When private classes began after the coronavirus pandemic at Buxton School, a high school in northwestern Massachusetts, faculty noted that as smartphone use grew, the sense of community eroded and students no longer interacted, according to a report in the New York Post.

School principal Peter Beck told the Post that “students have completely forgotten the basics of face-to-face interaction since they’ve been spending so much time on their smartphones.” He also added that the students faced difficulty in conversing with each other and “their ability to sit with other people has completely disappeared.”

Following his words, the school faculty decided to implement a ban on smartphones. According to the new law, both students and faculty are prohibited from using iPhones and Android devices on campus. The ban went into effect at the beginning of the academic year last September and has been a huge success so far.

“The students are thriving. They’ve adapted so well to the change,” Beck said. According to him, some students were frightened by the new law, “they could not imagine what it would be like without this device that has become a crucial part of every second of their lives.”
