GEO Group and SoftBank Donated Millions to Trump After Securing Federal Deals

Federal Election Commission records reveal that private prison and immigration detention center operator GEO Group contributed $1.4 million to a powerful super PAC supporting Donald Trump and his political agenda. The substantial financial backing arrived just weeks after the company secured two massive government agreements.

GEO Group Funnels Millions to MAGA Inc. Following Department of Homeland Security Contracts

On July 16, the pro-Trump super PAC MAGA Inc. received $1 million from GEO Reentry Services, LLC. That branch of GEO Group provides transitional services—including substance abuse classes and work-readiness skills—to help formerly incarcerated people return to their communities. A few weeks later on July 31, the same entity donated an additional $413,000 to Trump’s $400 million war chest.

The political contributions immediately followed a major business win for the firm. GEO Group won two five-year Department of Homeland Security contracts to operate detention processing facilities in Colorado and North Carolina. In public statements, the private prison company estimated that the contracts will generate more than $160 million in annual revenue.

SoftBank’s $50 Million Library Donation Precedes Ohio Data Center Lease

While prison operators secured lucrative detention processing deals, Japanese corporate giant SoftBank made a similarly timed financial contribution. The company contributed $50 million to the Trump Presidential Library in January, months before announcing a sprawling land lease with the federal government for a new data center in Ohio.

SoftBank revealed the timeline of the donation in a response letter to a June inquiry from lawmakers, including Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), and Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM), who raised concerns about potential bribery. In March, SoftBank’s SB Energy subsidiary formed a public-private partnership to build what it describes as the world’s largest AI data center at a US Department of Energy site in Portsmouth, Ohio. As part of that partnership, SB Energy will build a massive nearby gas-fired power plant with a capacity of at least 9.2 gigawatts.

Lawmakers Question Timing and Precedent of Presidential Library Donations

The timing of SoftBank’s contribution broke with historical norms for presidential libraries. As congressional lawmakers noted in their initial letter, SoftBank previously contributed to the presidential libraries of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush. However, those donations occurred only after the presidents had left office and after the relevant library foundations and institutions had been established.

With the Donald Trump Presidential Library, SoftBank donated during Trump’s term and before any presidential library has been constructed. Compounding the unusual circumstances, the organization originally responsible for accepting donations—the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Fund—had been dissolved by the state of Florida last September after failing to file an annual report. SoftBank stated in its response that it directed its $50 million contribution instead to the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit where Donald Trump’s son, Eric Trump, serves as a trustee, according to Citizens for Ethics reports.

“Are we expected to believe it’s a coincidence that two months after Softbank donated $50 million to the Trump library, his administration announced a massive lease deal for Softbank’s data center?”

Broader Concerns Over Handshake Deals and Corporate Influence

SoftBank defended the transaction in its correspondence, maintaining a traditional stance on its philanthropic giving. As with its prior contributions to Presidential libraries, SoftBank understands that this donation will be used to support the construction and operation of the Donald J. Trump Presidential Library, the company’s letter reads.

Again and again, it seems like Trump is putting handshake deals with CEOs over what’s best for Americans, Warren said in a statement.
