Mayor Park Jong-woo of Geoje inspected the site of damage caused by heavy rain. Mayor Park Jong-woo visited Majang Village in Dunduk-myeon, which suffered damage from rain that fell over the weekend on the 14th, and then visited the Jangseungpo-dong landslide site and the Gohyeoncheon River disaster prevention project construction site on the 15th, and instructed measures to prevent additional damage.

Mayor Park, who first visited the Jangseungpo-dong landslide site, ordered swift safety measures to prevent secondary damage and visited the residents’ temporary shelter, the Gyeongro Center, to check for any inconveniences. Mayor Park told the residents that he would consider designating steep slopes as collapse risk areas to prevent landslides from occurring again, and promised not to spare any other necessary administrative support.

Mayor Park Jong-woo then visited the area around Gohyeon Intercity Bus Terminal, where there are concerns over flood damage in the lower reaches of Gohyeon Stream due to the recent frequent heavy rains. Mayor Park, who received a report on the status of the project from the head of the Gohyeon Stream upper reaches river disaster prevention project site, urged the speedy promotion of the project and meticulous construction to protect the lives and property of local residents.

The 11th Gohyeon-dong neighborhood chief, who attended the scene, suggested that Geoje City come up with countermeasures, saying that there is a serious risk of loss of life and property due to flooding of roads and commercial buildings caused by sewer backflow that occurs every year during heavy rain.

Mayor Park stated, “Whenever heavy rain and high tide overlap, the lower reaches of the Goheuncheon River overflow, exposing many citizens to the risk of flooding every year,” and added, “In order to prevent damage, we need to build a flood prevention wall that is much higher than the road, but it is not easy because the roads and bridges also need to be raised accordingly,” and instructed that a plan to utilize the Mundong Reservoir in the upper reaches of the Goheuncheon River be reviewed for the safety of citizens.
