The actor, his wife Amal Alamuddin Clooney, and their two children have been granted citizenship, according to an official decree released Monday.This move confirms an ambition Clooney hinted at in early December, when he publicly lauded France’s robust privacy laws as a haven for his family.
A Desire for Privacy and a Love of French Culture
“I love the French culture, your language, even if I’m still bad at it after 400 days of courses,” the 64-year-old actor told RTL radio at the time. “Here, they don’t take photos of kids.there aren’t any paparazzi hidden at the school gates. That’s number one for us,” he added.
Clooney’s connection to Europe extends beyond his recent citizenship. He purchased an estate in Italy’s Lake Como region in 2002, and he and Amal acquired a historic manor in England. In 2021, the couple expanded their European holdings with the purchase of the Domaine du Canadel, a former wine estate near Brignoles in southern France.
Expanding European Roots
While the Clooneys also maintain a New York apartment and a property in Kentucky, they reportedly sold homes in Los Angeles and Mexico in recent years. The actor shared with RTL that, despite their globetrotting lifestyle, their French home “is where we’re happiest.”
