Hollywood big shots join Clooney in supporting him
Hollywood star George Clooney, who had urged US President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race, has publicly expressed his support for Vice President Kamala Harris, who has emerged as a replacement candidate.
According to CNN and the New York Times (NYT) on the 23rd (local time), Clooney released a statement that day saying, “We are all very happy to be able to support Vice President Harris’ historic journey.”
Regarding President Biden’s withdrawal from the race, he said, “President Biden has shown what true leadership is,” and “He is once again saving democracy.”
Clooney has long supported the Democratic Party. He attended President Biden’s fundraising event in Los Angeles last month, contributing significantly to the Biden campaign’s $28 million fundraising.
However, Clooney caused a great shock by urging Biden to withdraw from the presidential race in an article he contributed to the New York Times on the 10th of this month, citing his advanced age and cognitive abilities as issues.
Clooney’s endorsement of Harris has prompted Hollywood donors to back Harris. Netflix founder and chairman Reed Hastings wrote to X on the day, “Congratulations to Kamala Harris. It’s time to win.”
Abigail Disney, the entertainment heiress to the Walt Disney family who had publicly called on President Biden to resign, also told CNBC she had resumed donating to Democrats and said Vice President Harris was a good candidate for president.
Academy Award-winning actors Jamie Lee Curtis, Bradley Whitford, Viola Davis, Cheryl Lil Ralph, and Bridgerton producer Shonda Rhimes have also supported Harris on social media.
According to Harris’s campaign, Vice President Harris raised $81 million in the first 24 hours of her candidacy, the largest 24-hour fundraising haul in any presidential election this year.
However, some Democratic supporters in Hollywood appear to be concerned about whether Vice President Harris can win. According to Bloomberg, Todd Morgan, chairman of Bel Air Investment Advisors, a Beverly Hills-based investment advisory firm, said, “I’m glad Biden is stepping down, but I don’t know if it will make a difference,” adding, “I think the damage (from Trump’s lead) has already been done.”
