Mercedes driver George Russell set the pace ahead of Charles Leclerc during Friday practice at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, kicking off a sprint weekend at the 2026 Singapore Grand Prix under wildfire haze and impending grid penalties.
George Russell Tops Single Practice Session at Marina Bay
Formula 1 drivers faced a tight schedule at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, where George Russell led Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc by 0.198 seconds during the weekend’s only practice session.
A late push from Leclerc split an early all-British top three, placing McLaren’s Lando Norris in third, while Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri completed the top five on soft-compound tyres.
The morning session carried immediate competitive weight because the Marina Bay circuit hosts one of six sprint races on the 2026 calendar.
Drivers had just 60 minutes of track time before diving straight into sprint qualifying.
“I love street circuits. This is a track that requires a lot of commitment. You’re close to the walls, you’re racing at night, which is an added excitement and a different element to a lot of races we drive on”
Russell, Mercedes driver
Russell noted the unique pressure of the schedule. The only big difference this year is it’s a sprint race. So straight away, already on Friday, you’re into qualifying,
he explained, adding that drivers usually build up their speed progressively over multiple practice sessions on a street track.
Max Verstappen Chases Elusive Singapore Victory
Four-time world champion Max Verstappen finished the practice session sixth fastest using medium tyres, sitting 0.732 seconds off the pace while aiming to conquer a circuit where he has never won.
Verstappen has yet to secure pole position or a grand prix victory across nine appearances at Marina Bay, though he has finished second on three occasions.

“Yeah, I mean, I think in the last few years, we have always been bad at low-speed [corners]. Low-speed and just kerbing, the bumps. This year’s car is probably more competitive in low-speed, but we still struggle on bumps and kerbs. We know that.”
Max Verstappen, Red Bull driver
Verstappen acknowledged that chasing victory requires realism given the car’s historic struggles over bumps. So, of course, you have unfinished business when you have not won the race. Actually, every year I come back and I’m trying to win it, but it also needs to be realistic,
Verstappen said.
Russell Starts from Back of Grid After Penalty
Andrea Kimi Antonelli arrives in Singapore holding an 84-point championship lead over his Mercedes teammate.
Russell’s title ambitions face an uphill battle this weekend because Russell will start Sunday’s grand prix from the back of the grid as a penalty for exceeding his allocation of power unit components, following an engine failure in the closing stages of the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia.
Mercedes also split specifications for data collection, with Russell reverting to a previous car specification while Antonelli ran a new aerodynamic package introduced in Malaysia to evaluate upgrade performance.
Wildfire Haze and Weather Threats Loom Over Marina Bay
On-track preparations unfolded underneath air-quality warnings driven by wildfire haze from Indonesia, where illegal slash-and-burn farming practices pushed pollution to record levels in the city-state.
Organizers and officials advised citizens to limit outdoor activities as the racing action proceeded.
Weather forecasts add further unpredictability.

Thundery showers are forecast across all three days alongside high temperatures, raising the possibility that the event could be declared a Heat Hazard race by the FIA.
