The United States House Ethics Committee released a report this Thursday (16) in which it concluded that Brazilian-born Republican congressman George Santos violated the law during the campaign for last year’s legislative election and that the politician “not trustworthy”.

According to the document, the investigation found “compelling evidence” against Santos.

The report highlights that Santos “deceived donors into providing what they thought were contributions to his campaign, but which were actually payments for his personal benefit.”

According to CNBC, the son of Brazilians used the money to make purchases at a designer store and also to pay for adult content on an online platform.

Last month, Santos’ former campaign treasurer, Nancy Marks, pleaded guilty to Santos’ campaign finance fraud charges.

The Ethics Committee sent the report to the members of the Chamber and directed them “to take all measures they deem appropriate and necessary”.

In addition to diverting resources from the campaign, the Brazilian is accused of lying in a large part of his campaign biography, such as his name, religion (he claimed to be Jewish), education and professional experience.

The suspicion that he had sexually harassed a man who was looking for a job in his campaign office was not confirmed by the Ethics Committee.

The congressman faces criminal charges of theft and fraud in New York federal court.

After the release of the report, Santos published on a social network that he will not resign from his position, but that he will not seek re-election either.
