Georgia puzzles visitors. What you see and what you hear don’t match. The summary after a few days, based on a famous film title by director Rosa von Praunheim: It’s not the Georgians who are perverted, but the situation in which they live.

The state capital Tbilisi is full of graffiti with unambiguous messages: “Never back to the USSR” and “Putin = Killer” is written in red on house walls, flanked by the blue and yellow colors of Ukraine and EU flags with the golden wreath of stars. Whether sprayed or as fabric flags waving in the wind: they are as omnipresent in the cityscape as the national flag with the five red crosses on a silvery white background.

Polls confirm the pro-European orientation of the small republic in the South Caucasus bordering Russia. The EU enjoys a higher reputation there than in most EU countries. Over 80 percent of citizens want to join it.
