This could well be Geraint Thomas’ last year as a professional cyclist. But his admirable condition in the Giro d’Italia, of which he is now the leader, has postponed -and for a long time- the idea of hanging up the bike.
“I don’t know if I will retire this year or not. I thought that I would retire at the end of 2023, but it is possible that I will do another season ”, the Welshman had limited months ago regarding the matter. “It will be at INEOS or nowhere else,” he said then.
But now, it seems that he is not only on track to extend his adventure in this world, but would do so for longer than expected. As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, he plans to extend his professional career until 2025!
This is all surely because of how well he is doing in the Pink Race, where he arrived with some doubts for a season without much filming and with illnesses. However, as was the case on the last Tour, he is proving his validity in rounds of three weeks and that if luck is on his side, he is a very reliable router.
When he had to renew with INEOS at the end of 2021, he faced many obstacles as he was not seen at that time as a guarantee – he had gone down in his last two big goals – and ended up signing an agreement in which his salary was significantly reduced .
Surely that will not be the case now, since since then he has shown the opposite and surely the British will want to take full advantage of his longevity, to lighten the transition they make towards a young and fresh litter.
