Gérald Darmanin back in New Caledonia in early March to discuss the status of the archipelago

by time news

He promised it, he does it. Gérald Darmanin will travel to New Caledonia from March 2 to 8, for his second trip there. The Minister of the Interior and Overseas intends to “continue” the cycle of discussions on the institutional future of the archipelago, the minister’s entourage told AFP on Friday. He “had made this commitment during his last trip” in December 2022, added the entourage.

This new visit, whose program has not been specified, will take place after the congress scheduled for February of the Kanak and Socialist Liberation Front (FLNKS), which brings together the majority of the independence movements.

Bilateral meetings in sight

During his seven-day trip last December Gérald Darmanin had accepted the independence proposal to wait for this congress to be held before organizing bilateral meetings on the future status of the territory.

Three referendums have rejected independence, but the legitimacy of the last one, organized in December 2021 in the midst of the Covid-19 epidemic, is disputed by the independence camp.
