After a nightmarish month of July, the Gironde has been in flames again since Tuesday. The Landiras fire, in the south of the department, which had already destroyed 14,000 hectares of forest a month ago, resumed even stronger and has already devastated 6,000 hectares this Wednesday.
But the firefighters had to deal with a total of forty fire starts throughout the Gironde on Tuesday, and another eight in just one hour on Wednesday morning. Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin expressed “great suspicions that the fire which resumed was the work of arsonists”, during a trip to Aveyron. “This morning, there were eight fires, between 8 and 9 a.m., which started a few hundred meters apart, which is quite unusual,” said the minister.
In the morning, the question had already been addressed during a press briefing at the operational command post installed in Landiras. The delegate prefect for defense and security in the south-west zone, Martin Guespereau, then indicated that the origin of these fires “is not known” even if “some are obviously criminal. »
