The day before, he had denied in a press release a trip to Gruson, in the North, where « casserolades » were announced to welcome him. But Gérald Darmanin went there all the same, on Saturday May 6. It was by a tweet posted at midday, showing him all smiles with local elected officials cutting a tricolor ribbon, that the Minister of the Interior announced his trip. “Inauguration of the new town center of Gruson in our beautiful metropolis of Lille with the mayor”he wrote in the caption.

On Friday, while several calls for casserolades – demonstrations by opponents of the pension reform – had been made to welcome him to Gruson, the ministry issued a press release denying this trip.

“Contrary to what is sometimes mistakenly indicated, Gérald Darmanin, Minister of the Interior and the Putre-Mer, will not be going to Gruson, in the North, this Saturday, May 6, 2023”affirmed this press release posted on Twitter by the prefecture of Hauts-de-France, headed by Georges-François Leclerc, one of the minister’s relatives. “Clarification: there was never any question of him coming”had added in another tweet Prefecture.

The degraded town hall of Gruson

“Well then, are we hiding? Do we publish fake news at the prefecture and the Ministry of the Interior because we are afraid of the people and their saucepans? », questioned the Lille citizen collective L’Offensive on Twitter. According to the regional daily The voice of the North, the facade of the town hall of Gruson has been degraded with motor oil a few hours before the minister’s arrival.

Asked by Agence France-Presse, the minister’s entourage argued on Saturday that Gérald Darmanin had “decided to go there at the last moment” and had arrived shortly after the start of the ceremony. On Tuesday, the minister was pleased not to have been welcomed by « casserolades » during a trip near Lyon. It was a ceremony of homage to a gendarme who died as a result of his injuries in service, within the confines of the gendarmerie. Elected from Tourcoing, Gérald Darmanin is very regularly in his city and criss-crosses his department.
