A few hours after the publication of a column in Le Figaroin which around sixty artists denounce the media and artistic “lynching” of Gérard Depardieu, it is the turn of the actor – indicted for rape since 2020 – to speak out.
“I think it’s very courageous on the part of the signatories,” he reacted to RTLdeeming “this letter very beautiful”.

56 figures from the world of cinema and song defended in this text the “last sacred monster”, at the heart of a political-media controversy. Among them are the director Bertrand Blier, the actresses Nathalie Baye, Carole Bouquet or Charlotte Rampling or even Carla Bruni, Arielle Dombasle or Jacques Dutronc.
The recent broadcast of a report on the actor, in the program “Complément d’investigation” on France 2, caused a shock wave. In these images, Gérard Depardieu multiplies misogynistic and insulting comments targeting women and even a little girl.
The scene caused reactions right up to the top of the state. Culture Minister Rima Abdul Malak denounced comments that “put France to shame” and announced the opening of “disciplinary proceedings” against the actor to possibly strip him of his Legion of Honor. But Emmanuel Macron disavowed the minister Thursday evening, judging that she had “advanced”.

“I was presented with this letter,” explains Gérard Depardieu to RTL. “I thought it was beautiful and so I told the author that he could publish it.”

His daughter Julie had already spoken publicly to defend Gérard Depardieu. She denounced “an unprecedented manhunt” and “really disgusting” while recognizing that he could be “rude” and “heavy”.
