The 75 years of Gerard Depardieu, between cinema and scandals: most famous roles
Born on 27 December 1948 in Châteauroux, he is one of the most famous French actors in the world. He began acting in the 1960s and in his long career he played around two hundred roles in the cinema: he was, among others, Danton, Cyrano, Christopher Columbus and Obelix. But, over the years, he has also come under the spotlight for some scandals, including controversies related to taxes and, above all, accusations of harassment and rape
Today, December 27, 2023, Gerard Depardieu, one of the most famous French actors in the world, turns 75. Born in 1948 in Châteauroux, in central France, he began acting in the 1960s and in his long career he played around two hundred roles in the cinema: he was, among others, Danton, Cyrano, Christopher Columbus and Obelix. But, over the years, he has also come under the spotlight for some scandals, including problems related to taxes and, above all, accusations of harassment and rape
At the end of 2012, for example, Depardieu announced that he wanted to move to Belgium – and then that he wanted to renounce his French nationality – to escape his country’s tax system, which he defined as excessively oppressive. Weeks of controversy and clashes with the government followed. Then, in 2013, President Vladimir Putin signed a decree granting the actor Russian citizenship. On January 6, Depardieu received his new passport and had lunch with Putin on the Black Sea. Recently, with the war in Ukraine, the actor has distanced himself from Moscow
But the biggest shadows over Depardieu are those linked to the accusations of rape and harassment, coming from several women and always denied by the actor. The artist has been under investigation since 2020 for rape against the actress Charlotte Arnould. More recently he was accused by the actress Hélène Darras in connection with an alleged sexual assault perpetrated in 2007 during the filming of the film Disco. A few days ago, the Spanish journalist Ruth Baza also filed a formal complaint against her for sexual abuse dating back to 1995, during an interview in Paris
