On any of these days, a call can change his life and he will have to rush to pack his bags to go to his new destination. In football, when operations are triggered, things happen very quickly. But in the meantime Gerard Gumbau he continues in Girona quietly enjoying the summer surrounded by his family and working on his own to arrive as prepared as possible for the club that signs him soon. The 28-year-old Campllong midfielder is free agent since last July 1 at the end of the contract with theElx and not to renew after the illegal team’s relegation to the Second Division.

Playing Primera is the option we value the most. I have offers from abroad, but it is not the best for girls

GERARD GUMBAU – MIDFIELDER

“I’m doing it on my own, at the moment. I’m going to the gym, the physio SportClínic to treat my pubis, which I have a little touch from last season, etc.», explains Gumbau. Right now, it is not 100 percent clear where he will play. What is certain is that his priorities have changed since he and his wife became parents of two twins last October 2022 during the stage in Elche. For now, just contemplate staying in LaLiga. “I can’t say anything because I don’t know yet either, but playing a First Division it is the option we value the most. I have offers from abroad, although with the two girls I doubt it would be best to leave here”, he confesses.

Being a father has caused Gumbau to give importance to different things. Girls are the center of everything. “The priorities have become them one hundred percent. We are waiting for them 24 hours a day. It’s hard work, but very beautiful”, he insists. At the same time, he remembers that “they are illegal and we are very happy with how they welcomed us”: “Everything went well. Luckily, my wife had no complications during the birth and neither did they. We were a little more scared about the bill because there were two of them coming and in the end we didn’t have to worry about anything. They are almost nine months old now and they are incredible.”

The midfielder is proud when he mentions them. “I felt immense joy the day my wife told me she was pregnant. Well, the day we went to the gynecologist and they told us it was two… We both almost passed out (laughs). We expected one and got two. We weren’t aware of what was coming, although now I don’t think so either. Sometimes we look at them and say to ourselves: it seems impossible that they are ours».

Regarding the new reality that his family has had to live with, he admits that “it’s difficult”: “Everyone talks to you about motherhood, fatherhood… They tell you a thousand and one things. But when you’re really there, you may have already made films or prepared yourself that when you leave the hospital and get home it’s a radical change.’ However, everything is compensated when you see them grow day by day.

Gumbau dedicates a goal to his daughters.

Gumbau assures that “they bring me luck”. Despite all the work that comes with having two twins, fatherhood is no obstacle to continuing to progress in your career. On the contrary Feels fuller. “They were only able to come to see me in two games because they were small and in one I scored a goal that I could dedicate to them. This season, wherever I go, I’ll make them come to every game to see if I can mark every day for them”, he points out. And he adds: “I don’t know if they will like football as much as I do, but they will have my full support to be whatever they want to be.”

Apart from the birth of his daughters, Gumbau evaluates “positively” the two seasons he has been in Elche. “I have strengthened myself as a First Division player and I have shown that I can compete at the highest level. The first season was very good and, although things didn’t work out for us this year, I think that on a personal level I had a great season”, he considers.

A third of Girona’s football benches change hands

“After a year with ups and downs, it’s been good for me to disconnect these days and be able to spend time with my family. I feel mentally ready to face a new challenge and physically I am also taking care of myself. I’m a player who always dedicates time to me and I’m sure that I’ll put my mind to it”, he says. At the same time, he reasons that “I read the news and it seems that all the teams have signed me. I don’t know if Barça’s interest is real or not, but it’s always commendable that a club like that can think of me. In the situation I’m in, it’s a privilege to have so many options to choose from. It’s the result of the work I’ve done all this time and I’m proud of it. Maturity and experience go a long way. I think I am in the best moment of my career», he concludes.
