At least two canoeists were among the victims of the Solingen attack. One woman died and her husband was seriously injured. Two families in their Solingen club were affected by the disaster.

The German Canoe Association mourns the victims of Solingen. Among them is a canoeist from the gymnastics club in the Solingen district of Ohligs who was killed in the attack. “We were deeply saddened to learn of the tragic death of the canoeist. Our fellow athlete lost her life in the knife attack during the city festival in Solingen on Friday,” the association said on its website.

It continued: “Our thoughts are with the relatives and friends of the victims and all those affected in these difficult hours. The DKV expresses its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the deceased as well as to Ohligser TV.”

As the “Solinger Tageblatt” reported, the attacker brought disaster to two families from the Solingen club. A woman died, her seriously injured husband has since woken up from a coma. He can remember the crime exactly and has already given a statement to the police. “This is a tragedy for the small department,” club leader Beate Globisch told the newspaper.

The victim had always campaigned for integration, and attending the “Festival of Diversity” was a matter close to her heart. In addition to the couple, the attacker attacked two other people from the club, a mother and her daughter. They are in hospital.

The Ohligser Turnverein (OTV) also remembered the victims of the attack. “The OTV family is shocked, stunned and worried. One member died in the cruel attack on Friday and three members were seriously injured. We wish all those affected and their families a lot of strength to come to terms with what has happened,” the club’s website says.

On Sunday, 60 club members spontaneously met at the club’s hall to mourn together. “We talked, we cried, we let our feelings flow,” Globisch told the newspaper.

In the suspected Islamist attack in Solingen on Friday evening, an attacker killed three people with a knife and injured eight others at a town festival. The suspected perpetrator is 26-year-old Syrian Issa Al H., who is in custody. The Federal Prosecutor’s Office is investigating him for murder and suspected membership of the terrorist militia Islamic State (IS), among other things.
