It’s an action that could have changed everything for Dortmund. A penalty not whistled on Karim Adeyemi, in the draw (1-1) between BVB and Bochum on Friday evening. With Borussia just one point behind Bayern Munich at the top of the Bundesliga, some of the club’s supporters have issued threats against the match referee.

Sascha Stegemann admitted having made a mistake on the action, and filed a complaint after receiving threats against him and his family. German media even specify that the referee has been placed under judicial protection.

Guest of the television show Doppelpass on Sunday, Stegemann explained that he had no choice but to file a complaint. The referee had admitted the day before, after watching the images of the match, to have made a bad decision by not whistling the penalty in favor of Borussia Dortmund.

The referee could walk away from the pitch

“I fully understand the emotions surrounding what happened on Friday night. But my family and I received very specific threats and after seeing them I filed a criminal complaint,” he said. Stegemann added that he was wondering about the advisability of “taking a break” and getting away from the lawns for a while.

In a statement released on Saturday, the German federation said the TV images showed that Stegemann should have awarded a penalty to Borussia after the foul on Karim Adeyemi.

BVB, who were one point ahead of Bayern at the start of the 30th day, are now second, two points behind the Munich club. There are four days left until the end of the season.
